If nature has been calling for a while and you are torn between hiking and trekking, this article is for you. They all sound the same, don’t they? Especially since they all involve walking, right? Let’s discuss the nitty-gritty.

Hiking

It’s a leisure activity that involves walking down a pre-defined trail. It can be done either in the morning or in the evening. Hiking does not require a lot of prior preparation, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. The trail is mostly marked out, so there is no fear of getting lost.

There are several places to go hiking. Each has its unique and beautiful scenery. The activity will demand your energy and time depending on the area you and your boo choose to go hiking.

Things to Consider Before Hiking

Whether the destination you choose to hike is new to both of you or maybe a place that you have been to in the past, it is always important to be prepared. First and foremost, consider the weather. This will prepare you for the type of clothing to put on and what extras to carry.

The recommended attires such as a comfortable shoe and a loose backpack for the outdoors should be adhered to. Food and snacks will be necessary depending on the duration of the hiking. Not forgetting plenty of water to keep you hydrated throughout the hike. First Aid kits are not that important for hiking, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Benefits of hiking

  • Hiking is a form of light exercise, but a powerful cardio that can boost your health.
  • If you love nature, the singing birds on the trees and the scenic views will improve your mental health. They clear your mind and get you to relax.
  • It is a form of pleasure as you get to walk with bae through trails.

Trekking

Trekking, on the other hand, is a long trip done on foot over a long distance on a terrain that sometimes keeps on changing along the way. Trekking can be done by choice, but sometimes it is done as a necessity (like during social humanitarian events).

It is done in areas where there are no means of transport. The routes taken are not chartered, and therefore, some might require skills to navigate through. It requires a lot of energy, and it will test your endurance. To be honest, trekking long distances can be very challenging.

The time taken during trekking varies. It can be a few hours and sometimes it can take days to reach your destination. It is important to know that trekking should not be used as a way of getting fit; it can be dangerous if not well prepared for.

  • A lot of prior preparation should be carefully and thoughtfully done:
  • It is important to be fit both physically and mentally.
  • Having a guide who knows the way is necessary depending on your capability.
  • The type of clothing is very important. It should be comfortable. Carry extra clothes for changing (just in case you fall into the river).
  • Knowledge of how to handle a compass and a map is very vital. Your orientation skills will be put to the test.
  • First Aid kits will be essential. Anything can happen while trekking and being away from quick medical help will require immediate assistance from the kit.
  • Pack enough food and snacks. The journey will be long, and a lot of energy will be used. A lot of water will be essential to curb dehydration.
  • If you plan to carry a lot of luggage, think of how you’ll manage it throughout the trek. Some trekking regions have porters for hire.
  • Depending on the environment you will be trekking, it is important to consider where you’ll sleep. If there are lodges and hotels along the way, good for you. If not, then arrange for camping tents.

Importance of trekking

  • It is an immeasurable way of testing your mental and physical capability which many people can’t accomplish.
  • Navigating through unmarked terrains and being so close to nature will give you a sense of pride.

Conclusion

While hiking is best suited for those who do not have much time to spare, trekking is the best for those who want to test their endurance and have a lot of time. Hiking takes a little time, which means both of you, can visit many hiking destinations over a short period, unlike trekking. Whatever your decision, just remember that safety comes first.
