Not Your Basic Christmas Proposals

Just because everyone's getting engaged this holiday season doesn't mean that your proposal can't stand out.

Christmas is my favorite time of year. Sparkling lights and dustings of snow turn everyday streets into beautiful snow globes. Carolers singing at your door, neighbors inspired to give to the poor and my favorite… Christmas proposals!

If you and your partner love the holidays then there’s no better time to pop the question then Christmas. Combine the magical time of the year with what will become your most magical memory. Just don’t rely on the holiday doing all of the work. For an extraordinary Christmas engagement, you’ll want to do something your partner never imagined.

Scavenger Hunt Proposal

This proposal requires a lot of planning ahead of time. It may even require the blueprints of where you’ll be opening presents.

The Plan: After all the presents have been opened, have someone “find” a small box in the back of the tree. This box will have just your partner’s name on it. Inside the box will be the first of a series of clues. The clues will take your partner around the house. Eventually, they will find themselves surrounded by their family with you in the center. As they enter you’ll get down on one knee with one last box to be opened.

Tea Leaf Proposal

Don’t be thrown off by a name better suited for a psychic shop. This proposal is quite sweet and takes but a small amount of planning.

The Plan: Buy matching mugs for you and your partner. Have one of the mugs customized with “Will You Marry Me” at the bottom of the cup. On a cozy night, with just the two of you sitting by a fire suggest you make a cup of cocoa to set the scene. As the last sips empty the cup stare into yours. Try to look for an image out of the dregs of your drink. Then have your partner do the same. As they stare intently into the cup get down on one knee and get that ring out.

Tree Decorating Proposal

If you and your partner love decorating the tree together, this will be the perfect proposal. All you’ll need is to have a customized ornament made.

The Plan: Go about decorating the Christmas tree as you always have. Get out the classic decorations that make you both smile. Then as the tree is just about finished being decorated pull out a box with new ornaments. Have your partner take one out of the box. Watch with delight as their eyes light up when they see the decoration on the tree with those four little words that will change your lives.

Light It Up Proposal

You’ll need a fair amount of planning and a good hand with Christmas lights for this one. If you do it right though, your proposal will be the talk of the neighborhood all season long.

The Plan: While decorating the house with those beautiful twinkling lights take a moment on the roof to spell out, “Will You Marry Me?” Make sure the lights aren’t lit and that your partner’s not watching. Use their Christmas shopping as your open window. When your partner returns help with their bags and get settled in. As the two of you cozy up realize you haven’t turned on the Christmas lights. Ask her to stand outside and tell you if everything is lined up right. Then turn on the lights and run over to the love of your life. Wrap them in your arms and that ring around their finger because on this night the two of you will start planning out your forever.

The Nesting Dolls Proposal

Despite the name, there aren’t any dolls involved with this proposal. It’s also one of the easier ones to pull off.

The Plan: Wrap the ring inside a small box. Then put that box inside a larger box and wrap. Repeat this process till you are about five boxes deep. It’s best if the outer box is rather large. As your partner opens box after box watching her “big gift” get smaller and smaller the excitement and curiosity will begin to build. By that last box, they will half know, half be afraid to think they know what’s inside. As the paper falls to the floor, you can get down on one knee and ask the question that you both have been dying to hear.
